African American Military of Westmoreland County exhibit

We had an exciting and successful weekend with the opening of the African American Military of Westmoreland County exhibit in the historic courthouse and the season reopening of the Westmoreland Mercantile General Store in the Wakefield building.

On Friday, Mrs. Daisy Howard-Douglas, local historian and storyteller, and Ms. Alva Jackson, co-founder and program director of the Northern Neck Hidden History Trail, performed a ribbon-cutting ceremony on the newest exhibit. We sincerely thank Mrs. Daisy for her great passion and hundreds of hours spent putting this exhibit together. We cannot be more thankful. To learn more about the Northern Neck Hidden History Trail, go to https://nnkhiddenhistorytrail.org/.

The Westmoreland Mercantile General Store and Museum Gift Shop also opened on Friday with a lot of home decor items, foods and sauces, historical books, and memorabilia, as well as a back-room clearance sale. We are expanding our hours in the General Store and Gift Shop to Wednesday through Saturday, 10:00-4:00 each day. We will continue to stay open until 7:00 on first Fridays, June through October. If you find that you would like for us to be open additional hours, make your wishes known.

We are looking for more artisans and vendors to highlight in our shop. If you are an artist or artisan looking for a front-end store to place your items for sale, get in touch with Rosemary.

Moving into June, we are planning to start Artisans' and Farmers' Markets on the courthouse square and the green space behind the store. Stay tuned for more information coming out about this venture. If you are interested in being involved, please reach out to us. We are looking for vendors and volunteers.

Life is getting exciting at the Westmoreland County Museum!
